PMS
Around the time of their periods, many women have problems. In the few days before a period begins they may feel unusually tense, easily upset, clumsy or irritable. These feelings are due to premenstrual syndrome or PMS for short.
Feeling bloated or puffy or putting on a few extra pounds just before a period is also common. This excess weight which may make clothes feel uncomfortably tight, is caused by the body holding more water than normal. Period pain is another problem experienced at this time of the month. Painful periods are known as dysmenorrhoea (pronounced dis-men-or-ria). A period comes at the end of a monthly cycle, and is bought on by a number of hormonal and physical changes within the body. It is these changing hormone levels which have been linked to premenstrual syndrome. Learn More.
