There are public health professionals at airports and borders, so that anyone who has travelled into New Zealand and has flu symptons will report straight to them for advice. They will be assessed and tested if needed. They may then be given Tamiflu and held in isolation if it is thought this will help limit the spread of the virus.
Travellers are advised to call a doctor or healthline if they get flu symptons within 4 days of overseas travel. All passengers must fill out location forms so they can be traced by health officials if needed.
What is being done in our airports to help keep out the virus?
All international flights into New Zealand provide information to passengers on the need to notify public health staff at the airport if they have any flu like symptoms, or if they become symptomatic within 7 days of returning to phone their GP or Healthline (0800 611 116). The purpose of this is firstly to identify people who may need treatment, and secondly for actions to be taken to reduce the risk to the New Zealand community.
All passengers arriving in New Zealand are filling out location cards so that health authorities can trace them, and their contacts, if they become sick. This is a key tool for limiting the spread of infection.
Any incoming traveller showing flu-like symptoms, particularly if they are coming from a country reporting community-based transmission, will be assessed, tested and cared for in isolation with Tamiflu. Where they test positive for influenza A (the first step in identifying the new influenza A (H1N1) virus, their close contacts are also cared for in isolation.
